About Us

Regional government and devolution has become a hot topic since the English devolution process began in 1998. In 2002 the Government published a White Paper "Your Region, Your Choice", which outlined the opportunities for devolution in the English Regions, including the possibility for fully elected regional assemblies.

Currently the West Midlands Regional Assembly is responsible for developing and co-ordinating a strategic vision for improving the quality of life in the region. The Assembly is responsible for setting priorities and delivering regional strategies, including the regional strategies for each of these areas, and to ensure they are tailored to meet the needs of the West Midlands. These strategies will be developed by our strategic partnerships.

By championing these issues and creating strategies that will help shape our region, we bring decision-making closer to the people it affects. The Assembly will also ensure a stronger regional input into national policy making and spending decisions.

The West Midlands Regional Assembly is also the Strategic Review of Advantage West Midlands, the Regional Development Agency, co-ordinating the views of the Region to inform the policies and work of Advantage West Midlands.
