Housing
The West Midlands Region is home to 5.3 million people and is home to one of the most diverse populations outside of London. At its hearts lies the conurbation (Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull and Coventry), with a population of 2.25 million and at the other extreme lies the rural and more remote areas of Shropshire and Herefordshire. These two extremes of 'urban settlements' and 'isolated communities' pose particular challenges for housing within the Region, which have been addressed.
The Regional Housing Executive
Following the transfer of the Regional Housing Board from Government Office for the West Midlands (GOWM) to the Assembly, a new Board, known as the Regional Housing Executive (RHE) was launched on Thursday 28 September 2006. The initial key responsibilities of the new Executive was set out in a letter sent from DCLG, further information on the RHE and its wider reference group, the Regional Housing Partnership (RHP).
