Engaging with Europe

The Revised West Midlands Regional European Strategy (June 2008)

In June 2008 the revised West Midlands European strategy document was launched, bringing together into a single document the key matters for the Region to concentrate on in order to maximize the benefits of European working.

The strategy concentrates on four priorities:

1. Maximising the opportunities of the Single Market. We want the Region - its businesses, institutions and citizens - to be both comfortable and confident when operating within it.

2. Becoming a more successful player within the innovation, research and development arena across Europe.

3. Responding to the challenge of climate change and environmental protection. There is a broad consensus that this needs to be undertaken at a European level.

4. Engaging with the social dimensions of Europe.

These priority areas are then set within the wider European context to which the Region must relate and to which the four priorities will operate. The strategy has been developed to provide benefit by offering a simplified structure, focusing limited resources on a small number of key priorities and involving participation on a thematic basis in order to get Europe 'out of the box'.
